Eleventh World Cup victory for Anton Shipulin

Anton Shipulin (RUS, Fischer skis and boots) celebrated his eleventh World Cup victory at the Biathlon World Cup in Kontiolahti (FIN). Sprint runner-up was Andrejs Rastorgujevs (LAT, Fischer skis and boots) ahead of Quentin Fillon Maillet (FRA, Fischer skis and boots).

After he was not invited to the Olympics, Anton Shipulin now showed at the first World Cup after the Games that he was the best today. In absence of Martin Fourcade (FRA), who canceled his start because of gastrointestinal problems only very short before his start, as the first athletes were already on the course, the Russian showed a perfect shooting performance and lost less than half a minute in skiing on the fastest skier Julian Eberhard (AUT, Fischer skis and boots). "It was very difficult for me not to be at the Olympics, I did not have the heart to watch men's biathlon races, but I saw the women's races and, of course, I was very happy about the races of my sister Anastasiya Kuzmina (SVK, Fischer skis and boots)", the Russian said. With just under six seconds gap Andrejs Rastorgujevs made it onto the podium for the second time in his life. Quentin Fillon Maillet took third place in his only very good sprint this winter, marking his second podium finish of the season. With a win Johannes Thingnes Bø (NOR, Fischer skis and boots) would have benefitted a lot in the overall World Cup ranking due to the absence of Martin Fourcade, but with two penalties and a non-optimal final lap was not more than fourth place possible. Olympic champion Arnd Peiffer (GER, Fischer) finished fifth with a shooting mistake.
