Mario Seidl celebrates first World Cup victory

Mario Seidl (AUT, Fischer skis and boots) celebrated his first World Cup victory at the World Cup opener of the Nordic Combined in Ruka (FIN). Jarl Magnus Riiber (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) finished second ahead of Johannes Rydzek (GER, Fischer skis and boots).

Ruka-Kuusamo is known for extremely difficult wind conditions, which the athletes noticed already yesterday, when the stormy wind did not allow any jumps at all. Even today there was a strong wind from the front, which frightened especially the poorer jumpers and made them jump short. Because the gusty wind changed during a jump, some top athletes like Eric Frenzel (GER, Fischer) had big problems with the wind. Mario Seidl scored a first-class jump, giving him a lead of almost one minute in front of the very good jumper Jarl Magnus Riiber. "It went very well for me and also the wind was good, this is my favorite hill. I will ski my own race and I hope that I will perform well", said the Austrian, who was already in very good shape in summer. From the second lap onwards, his lead on the Norwegian dropped significantly, reaching ten seconds. On the way to the stadium Seidl again mobilized all his energies and was able to extend his lead again to 16 seconds. Third place went to Johannes Rydzek, who broke away from the chasing group in the last climb. Tomas Portyk (CZE, Fischer skis and boots) finished fourth. Eighth went to Vinzenz Geiger (GER, Fischer skis and boots).
