Frida Karlsson defeats Johaug at Holmenkollen

The mass start over 31 kilometers in classic style at Osloer Holmenkollen ended with a surprise: Frida Karlsson (SWE, Fischer ***) celebrated her first World Cup victory ahead of Therese Johaug (NOR, Fischer ***) and Ebba Andersson (SWE, Fischer ***).

Because the usual lap to Frognerseteren could not be raced due to lack of snow, the highest point of the course is the bonus sprint after 3.7 kilometers of each round, where Therese Johaug officially won the overall World Cup with her first passage and escaped from the other athletes. With the U23 World Championships in her legs, Ebba Andersson was unable to follow the Norwegian this time, only Heidi Weng (NOR, Fischer ***) and Frida Karlsson tried briefly. Movement came into the field when three Swedes and Krista Pärmäkoski (FIN) turned after the third lap to change skis - the only one allowed since this year, and the skis must also be in the pits before the race. The Swedes made up their backlog with new material and at least Ebba Andersson and Frida Karlsson escaped from the group before the next bonus sprint. The other 16 athletes also did not change their skis before the last lap - as did Therese Johaug. This quickly became noticeable and the two Swedes made up ground on Johaug and Charlotte Kalla (SWE, Fischer **) also escaped from the field. 3.3 kilometers from the finish line, Frida Karlsson alone tried to catch Johaug with a gap of only 15 seconds. Johaug also heard of the melting of her lead and a short time later looked over her shoulder with concern. At Gratishaugen, a kilometer before the finish, the Swede had reached Johaug, passed, but could open a gap. Johaug was again in front above the shooting range, but after the wave Frida Karlsson stormed up and away and celebrated her first World Cup victory ahead of Therese Johaug, who was calebrating with her successor. For the Norwegian alead of 45 seconds ahead after three laps today was not enough after winning with 1:45 minutes advantage in 2019 and was even 3:45 minutes ahead in 2016 before being suspended. Third place went to Ebba Andersson, for whom more was not possible after two starts at the U23 World Championships on Tuesday and Thursday. Charlotte Kalla finished fourth, just ahead of the group, which meant her best result of the season. Natalia Nepryaeva (RUS, Fischer ***) won the sprint of the group of twelve ahead of Katharina Hennig (GER, Fischer ***), who was sixth and achieved her second best result of the season. Kerttu Niskanen (FIN, Fischer ***) finished seventh ahead of Anamarija Lampic (SLO, Fischer ***) and Anne Kyllönen (FIN, Fischer ***).
