Emil Iversen third over 50 kilometers at Holmenkollen

Like last year, Alexander Bolshunov (RUS) again won the 50 kilometers at Oslo's Holmenkollen. Emil Iversen (NOR, Fischer ***) won the chasing group sprint and finished third.

Strong wind, continuous rain and thick fog, so that you could hardly see your hand in front of you, made the race anything but pleasant for racers and spectators. The men had to complete the 6.2 kilometer lap eight times, so that the total distance was 49.6 kilometers. For the first ten kilometers, the pace was mostly determined by the Norwegians, who have a total of 15 starting positions. It only got exciting later, however, when the skis were changed by the athletes at different times. At the beginning of the last lap, Hans Christer Holund (NOR, Fischer ***) finally attacked, ensuring that three teammates (Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Sindre Bjørnestad Skar and Martin Johnsrud Sundby (all NOR, Fischer ***)) fell behind from the group. On the way to the splittime 2.5 kilometers before the finish line, where this time no more World Cup points were distributed, Simen Hegstad Krüger (NOR) attacked on the climb in front of the chapel and only Alexander Bolshunov was able to follow the Norwegian. Together they fought for victory in the stadium and, like yesterday in the women's race, the athlete who came out of the slipstream after the shooting range and bridge succeeded: Alexander Bolshunov. The group reached the finish line 20 seconds later and Emil Iversen won the sprint for the podium ahead of Eirik Sverdrup Augdal (NOR, Fischer ***), who was the first to lead the group into the stadium. For the 24-year-old, who actually feels much more comfortable in free technique, it was the best World Cup result after he finished 13th in Lillehammer at the start of the season. Hans Christer Holund finished fifth ahead of Dario Cologna (SUI, Fischer ***), who made a strong impression throughout the race. Martin Løwstrøm Nyenget (NOR, Fischer ***) and Didrik Tønseth (NOR, Fischer ***) completed the top ten.
