Denise Herrmann becomes pursuit World Champion

Denise Herrmann (GER, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) celebrated her biggest success so far in the pursuit race at the biathlon World Championships in Östersund (SWE) and secured the gold medal. Tiril Eckhoff (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) won silver, Laura Dahlmeier (GER, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) took bronze. Johannes Thingnes Bø (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) secured only silver, Quentin Fillon Maillet (FRA, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) won bronze.

After the second prone stage, Denise Herrmann, the sixth in the sprint, shared the lead with local hero Mona Brorsson (SWE). But two misses in the first standing stage threw the former cross-country skier, who races only in the third year in biathlon, clearly behind the Swede. Brorsson arrived with a big lead alone at the last shooting, where her nerves failed and she missed four targets. Denise Herrmann kept her nerve and enjoyed the final lap. "I tried to concentrate totally on shooting, it was very windy and anything can happen until the last shooting, if there is a gust of wind. But then I made it and I was able to enjoy the final lap", she beamed. "Östersund seem to be my place to be. Last year I've already won the pursuit with the same shooting result." Laura Dahlmeier was on the final lap with a slight lead over Tiril Eckhoff, but as expected, the Norwegian was stronger and won the silver medal. Hanna Öberg (SWE, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) again missed the medals and this time came in fifth ahead of Anastasiya Kuzmina (SVK, Fischer skis, bindings and boots), who had seven penalties. Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) took eighth place ahead of Evgeniya Pavlova (RUS, Fischer skis and bindings).

In the men's pursuit race, both Bø brothers were among the defeated ones. Johannes lost a clear lead with three penalties in the last shooting and missed the gold medal, which secured surprisingly Dmitro Pidruchnyi (UKR). Tarjei Bø (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) lost the final sprint for bronze against Quentin Fillon Maillet, the fastest isolated pursuit time was not enough to win the medal. The more the Frenchman was happy about another bronze medal despite three penalties. Andrejs Rastorgujevs (LAT, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) achieved his best result of the season in sixth place. Evgeniy Garanichev (RUS, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) finished ninth.
