Nilsson and Klæbo triumph in the last sprint in Québec

Stina Nilsson (SWE, Fischer skis and bindings) and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) took the last sprint victories of the season in the freestyle sprint in the opener of the World Cup final in Québec, Canada. The Swede secured for the first time the crystal gobe for the sprint World Cup.

Distance specialists had a good chance of a good result in this difficult sprint under sleet-bearing conditions and strong winds on the Plains of Abraham in Québec city center, so skiers like Johaug (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots), Kalla ( SWE, Fischer skis and bindings) and Frida Karlsson (SWE, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) qualified for the best 30 and sprint specialists such as the Slovenians were without a chance. Natalia Nepryaeva (RUS, Fischer skis, bindings, and boots) may have suffered from the after-effects of her stomach problems from Falun, but she also did not like the difficult conditions as a heavy skier. Ingvild Flugstad Østberg (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) did not score as many points in eighths place as hoped for the overall World Cup in which the two athletes now split 113 points. With reaching the semi-finals, Stina Nilsson already had the Sprint World Cup safe, but she did not show if she knew that. In the final, the four Swedes worked perfectly together, first led by Nilsson and Dahlqvist (SWE) followed by Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) and Sadie Bjornsen (USA, Fischer skis, bindings and boots), shortly afterwards even all four Swedes were side by side in front at a spot where the Norwegian would have liked to overtake. But it was not possible for her to get through and she had to stop trying. Stina Nilsson, Maja Dahlqvist and Jonna Sundling (SWE, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) were able to pull away, while Falla was only able to fight for fourth place against Sweden's young talent, Frida Karlsson. Until the stadium, the three Swedes were more than 50 meters ahead and Stina Nilsson stormed towards her desired victory. But Dahlqvist fought hard until the last meter, leaving Nilsson in doubt for another two minutes until her win with just 0.01 seconds was official. "That were very hard conditions. It was hard to find the right tactic, the wind was very strong, so it was good to be first in the last downhill. I really wanted to win the sprint and leave the season with another success." This win of the sprint World Cup signifies the first crystal globe for the Swedish ladies ever - even for example Charlotte Kalla (SWE, Fischer skis and bindings) never won a distance or overall World Cup. Jonna Sundling was third in the Swedish triple win ahead of Falla and Karlsson, who finished fifth in her first World Cup sprint. Sadie Bjornsen came in sixth.

With Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Federico Pellegrino (ITA) and overall World Cup runner-up Alexander Bolshunov (RUS) the three favorites met in the final, complemented by Sindre Bjørnestad Skar (NOR, Fischer skis, bindings and boots), Johan Häggström (SWE , Fischer skis, bindings and boots) and Lucas Chanavat (FRA, Fischer skis, bindings and boots). While initially the Swede and the Frenchman led the race, the Russian stayed at the back and worked his way forward, as both Norwegians attacked. Häggström and Chanavat were unable to keep up in this difficult sprint so that only four athletes fought for podium results. Before reaching the stadium Klæbo looked over the shoulder to Bolshunov from second position behind Skar and on the back straight all four fought side by side for the best position before the last turn before the finish. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo had the inside track in front of Pellegrino. Nobody could prevent the next victory of sprint World Cup winner Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. Pellegrino finished second again. For Alexander Bolshunov everything looked like a third place, but Sindre Bjørnestad Skar gave everything in the final sprint and came closer and closer, while the Russian in the final meters was not giving everything and renounced the lunge - the podium place went to the Norwegian. Now there are 24 points n the overall World Cup between Klæbo and Bolshunov. Johan Häggström finished fifth ahead of Lucas Chanavat.
