Like his team-mate Fabian Rießle, he showed a very good jump, which gave the duo a head start in cross-country skiing. The Watabe brothers Yoshito and Akito (both JPN, Fischer skis, bindings and boots) started eight seconds later, Austria and Norway 22 and 27 seconds back. "That's a good starting position. We gave the other a nut to crack, but the other teams should not be underestimated. They are also strong skiers and Norway is only 17 seconds behind", said Frenzel.
Eric Frenzel started the cross country race so fast that he was able to increase his lead over the pursuers and then the gap remained constant for a few laps. Only in the seventh lap Rehrl attacked and escaped a few meters from Schmid - Watabe had to say goodbye and dropped back. Due to this attack and the still fast pace, also after Riiber made up with Gruber again, the lead of the German team melted up to twelve seconds. Fabian Rießle once again mobilized all his energies and won the gold medal, which was ultimately safe again, as Riiber and Gruber now concentrated on the fight for silver. In the final sprint, the Norwegian proved to be stronger and cheered on silver. "It's a great day today," said Eric Frenzel after the renewed gold. "We have done a great job, we are world champions! That feels very good, now here in Seefeld everything has just moved back and the form is there on time." The Watabe brothers finished fourth, as expected. All the other teams had started more than a minute behind fourth place into the cross-country race, so that nobody could intervene in the fight for the medals.
