Andreas Nygaard claims victory at Vasaloppet

After the traditional 90 kilometers from Sälen to Mora, Andreas Nygaard (Team Santander, Fischer skis and boots) was the fastest man in the finishing sprint today at Vasaloppet and crossed the finishline 3 seconds ahead of Bob Impola (Team Serneke, Fischer). On the women’s side Katerina Smutna (Bauer Ski Team, Fischer) took third place.

Constant fresh snowfall throughout the morning of the 94th edition of the Vasaloppet made tough conditions with slow tracks and the skiers had to work hard throughout. After several unsuccessful break aways, Tore Bjoerseth Berdal (Team Koteng, Fischer skis and boots) put in an extra gear, getting a gap of close to 50 seconds at Eldris with only 11 kilometers to go, but even he got caught with 4 kilometers left to the finish.

A large group of skiers approached the finish line together. Andreas Nygaard placed himself in a perfect position, making it tough for anyone to challenge his excellent sprinting skills. After second place in last year’s finishing sprint, this year Andreas Nygaard took the victory 3 seconds ahead of Bob Impola. “I am so thankful for this win, it was my main goal this season and now I am full of confidence for the coming events”, said Andreas Nygaard with a big smile at the finish. His team mates Anders Aukland (Team Santander, Fischer skis and boots) and Tord Asle Gjerdalen (Team Santander, Fischer skis and boots) in 8th an 9th place likewise made the top ten.

On the women´s side, Katerina Smutna took third place behind Lina Korsgren (Aare Ski Club) and Strid Oeyre Slind (Team Koteng). The Visma Ski Classics leader and last year’s winner Britta Johansson Norgren (Team Lager 157, Fischer skis and boots) finished in 4th place.
