Khoroshilov laid the foundation of his success with a strong first run in which he ranked seventh, making the podium seem a distinct possibility. In run 2 he was able to up the tempo even more. On the demanding Slalom slope and with the weather making conditions even more difficult he threw caution to the wind, tearing down the course to land his tenth World Cup podium overall.
In fact, the whole event proved highly successful for the athletes of the Fischer racing team. Local favourite Daniel Yule, who had impressed in the last races with two successive Slalom wins, catapulted himself up from twelfth after the first run to fifth at the finish. He missed out on another podium place by only seven hundredths, the ground he had to make up from the first run proving just a little too much. Swiss racer Tanguy Nef (eighth place) also turned in a thoroughly convincing performance.
Fischer ace Vincent Kriechmayr produced an impressive race in the Downhill on Saturday, although it did not bring the desired result. Last year he had found the fastest line on the Lauberhorn, but had to settle for eighth place this time out. The day before he had finished tenth in the Combined.
In Sestriere, the Fischer ladies could not quite reproduce the form of previous races this weekend. Katharina Truppe’s 27th place in the Giant Slalom was the Fischer team’s best result, but in the Parallel Giant Slalom on Sunday both she and her colleague Katharina Huber went out in the first round. One reason for Fischer to be optimistic was Norwegian Kaja Norbye whose 18th place on Saturday was her best World Cup result to date.
