Product safety
The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), (EU) 2023/988, is a European Union regulation that aims to ensure a high level of product safety for consumers. It lays down the essential requirements that products must meet in order to be sold on the EU market. Here are some of the key points:
- Safety requirements: Products must be safe and must not pose any risk to the health and safety of consumers. This applies to normal use and to foreseeable misuse.
- Producer responsibilities: Producers have the responsibility to ensure that their products meet the safety requirements. This includes carrying out risk assessments, providing safety information and labeling the products. In addition, producers must provide a contact point for safety-related enquiries.
- Surveillance and enforcement: The market surveillance authorities of the member states are responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with the GPSR. They can remove products from the market if they are deemed unsafe.
- Recall and warnings: If a product is identified as dangerous, manufacturers and distributors must take measures to warn consumers and, if necessary, recall the product.
- Documentation and traceability: Manufacturers must provide technical documentation and information on the traceability of their products in order to be able to react quickly in the event of safety issues.
