Austrians triumph in team competition in Lahti

Philipp Aschenwald, Gregor Schlierenzauer, Michael Hayböck and Stefan Kraft (all AUT, Fischer) won the team competition of ski jumpers in Lahti (FIN). The German team was narrowly beaten. Third place went to Japan.

Until the last jumper developed a duel between Austria and Germany with Karl Geiger, Richard Freitag, Andreas Wellinger (all GER, Fischer) und Stephan Leyhe (GER). For a long time, the Germans were in the lead, their starting jumper Karl Geiger was clearly the best today. "Last week in training on the 90 meter hill, I tried to build trust again and I did not even think that I could do it that well today," said the Bavarin. But the Austrians stroke back again and again. Before the last jump, the Austrians were half a point ahead, then Stefan Kraft fixed the victory with his jump on 130 meters with a good headwind and Gregor Schlierenzauer celebrated a strome comeback after ten weeks without World Cup - the WSC train has not yet left for him: "For me personally, it's nice to be back in the World Cup and it's great for our entire team that we could win here in Lahti today. I have a few tough weeks behind me during which I was training very hard. This pays off now, but, to be honest, there's still a lot of work left to do. We are a young team and today's win is a great motivation for all of us before the World Championships at home in Seefeld." Third place went completely safely to the Japanese in front of Poland with a much too weak Jakub Wolny (POL) - co-favorite Norway is unlucky just before the World Championships: Yesterday, Daniel Andre Tande (NOR) crashed at 132 meters in training and felt pain in the knee, but nevertheless competed in the qualification and then hobbled with pain out of the outrun. He was replaced in today's competition by Andreas Stjernen (NOR), who crashed hard in trial round, but probably remained unhurt. In the first competition round, he apparently had no confidence in his jumps and landed at 83 meters, so that his team missed the final.
