Nepryaeva and Klæbo win classic sprint test event in Oberstdorf

One year before the World Championships, Natalia Nepryaeva (RUS, Fischer ***) and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo (NOR, Fischer ***) secured the victories in the classic sprint. Anamarija Lampic (SLO, Fischer ***) finished second and Erik Valnes (NOR, Fischer ***) third.

Without Maiken Caspersen Falla (NOR, Fischer ***), who caught a cold, places in the Norwegian sprint team were free and because of the difficult tracks Heidi Weng (NOR, Fischer ***) and even Therese Johaug (NOR, Fischer ***) chose to start. With 12th and 13th place in the prologue they both did very well, but in the quarter-finals it was Johaug ended up, Weng in the semi-finals. In the final, Anamarija Lampic and Natalia Nepryaeva determined the action on the difficult course with three climbs. The Russian attacked in the Egli hill before the finish, but the Slovenian counterattacked and was the first in the descend to the stadium. There the 24-year-old Nepryaeva came out of the slipstream and took her second World Cup victory. Linn Svahn (SWE, Fischer **) finished fifth in her first classic sprint in the World Cup.

While sprint leader Lucas Chanavat (FRA, Fischer ***) had no chance in the quarter-finals as expected in his poorer technique, Federico Pellegrino (ITA) did surprisingly well and made the cut into the final over his time, while Alexander Bolshunov (RUS) just failed in the clearly slower second semifinal. In the final, Gleb Retivykh (RUS, Fischer ***) and Johannes Høsflot Klæbo were at the front until Oskar Svensson (SWE, Fischer ***) pushed past the Norwegian, who still wanted to save some energy. Klæbo, Svensson, Retivykh and Pellegrino - in the second climb, four athletes fought side by side, with the Italian being the only one to grapple off the track. The Russian was the first into the descend to the last climb followed by the Swede and Pellegrino, but on the last climb Klæbo attacked as expected and ran up the mountain in his special classic style. Nobody could catch up with him in the downhill and he won with a clear lead. Erik Valnes, like Pål Golberg (NOR), pushed past Pellegrino out of the slipstream and secured third place behind his team-mate. Oskar Svensson finished fifth ahead of Gleb Retivykh.
