Germany dominates team sprint in Nordic Combined

The German athletes Eric Frenzel and Vinzenz Geiger (both GER, Fischer skis and boots) won the team sprint in Val di Fiemme (ITA) just ahead of Fabian Rießle and Johannes Rydzek (both GER, Fischer skis and boots). Third place went to the Norwegians Mikko Kokslien (NOR, Fischer skis and boots) and Magnus Hovdal Moan (NOR).

Eric Frenzel and Vinzenz Geiger were 15 seconds ahead of their team-mates in the cross-country race over a total of 10x1.5 kilometers, in which the best Norwegians took a break from competition. Vinzenz Geiger showed a great jump, while his teammates were all not completely satisfied. Especially Frenzel has been struggling with his inrun position for some time, which means that he can not put enough pressure on the take-off. After the first lap of skiing, both teams were already together and worked together as planned to increase the gap to the others. The decision was to made only in the last laps, where Frenzel attacked in the uphill, but he was not able to get away from Rießle. In the final lap Rydzek seemed to be much stronger than Geiger and escaped a bit. In the uphill Geiger then significantly increased the pace and was able to close the gap again. In the stadium, as a taller and heavier athlete he had good opportunities from the slipstream and sprinted to victory - what the German coach did not totally like: "Actually, Ritschi should have won because during a few laps he was waiting for him. In the finish it was not planned that way." For the athletes themselves, that was not a problem: "He saved some energies and the slipstream gives you a good chance. I also had to use shorter poles the last lap because I broke the poles in the last corner, but that should not be an excuse." "There is a lot in Vinz, also a lot of surprise, so I'm thrilled what he delivered here today," praised Eric Frenzel his partner. Fabian Rießle explained: "We wanted to take turns and managed to stay ahead of the competition and deserved to be first and second."

An exciting battle developed around the places behind the German duos. The Japanese Yoshito and Akito Watabe (both JPN, Fischer skis and boots), who took third after a very good jump from Akito before the cross country race, could not keep up with the pace of the Germans. During the race a three-headed chase group was formed out of which finally the Norwegians outsprinted the others in the finish sprint. Fourth went to the Finns Ilkka Herola (FIN, Fischer skis and boots) and Eero Hirvonen (FIN) ahead of the Austrians Lukas Klapfer (AUT) and Bernhard Gruber (AUT, Fischer skis and boots), who returned after his appendectomy in his team. The Watabe brothers finished sixth.
