Former cross-country skier Viola Bauer from Germany, who was a friend of Katharina's aunty, brought her to cross-country skiing. There up on the German Katharina Hennig began her career as a cross-country skier and quickly worked her way up to World Cup level. At the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, she won the silver medal in relay and gold in the Team Sprint.

 

When did you start cross-country skiing?

I started with cross-country skiing at the age of just 2 years. In the 1st grade I started with club training and then from the 7th grade I attended the boarding school in Oberwiesenthal.

What is your favorite place to compete and where do you like to train?

My favorite competition place to compete is Val di Fiemme. My favorite training locations are the Erzgebirge and the Allgäu Alps in Germany.

What kind of training do you enjoy the most?

Trail running, hiking and of course cross-country skiing are really fun for me.

What was your biggest breakthrough in your cross-country career?

I had several decisive successes in my career. I would say 11th place at the World Championships in Lahti in my first year with the women. Later, my first World Cup podium was in 2020 in Val di Fiemme. Finally, I would say gold and silver in the Team Sprint and Relay in Beijing.

Where have you not been that you want to go to?

I have not been to New Zealand yet but I would really like to go there.

I am always happy.

What is your favourite quote or personal motto?

Don‘t worry, be happy!

What do you like to do in your free time?

What I like most is to spend time with friends and family.

Which workout do you have to get used to?

For cycling I always have to overcome myself a little.

What advice would you give young athletes?

Find the right balance of fun and being a professional!

What does #livetoski mean to you?

For me #livetoski means that cross-country skiing is not just a sport, but a way of life and my passion.
