Norway and France win relay gold

Synnøve Solemdal (NOR), Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold (NOR, Fischer), Tiril Eckhoff (NOR, Fischer) and Marte Olsbu Røiseland (NOR) won gold in the women's relay at the Biathlon World Championships in Antholz (ITA), later Emilien Jacquelin (FRA), Martin Fourcade (FRA), Simon Desthieux (FRA) and Quentin Fillon Maillet (FRA, Fischer ***) became relay World Champions.

The women's relay race was dominated by the Italians in the first half of the race - Lisa Vittozzi (ITA) and Doro Wierer (ITA) were more than a minute ahead. But Federica Sanfilippo (ITA, Fischer ***) quickly wiped out this clear lead: in the standing stage the other teams had caught up with them, then the Italian even had to go in the penalty loop twice. As usual, Norway had to catch up after their starting skier was clearly behind as usual this season and Tiril Eckhoff is still looking for her top shape - today she had to go into the penalty loop once. Another outsider team led the race with 40 seconds at the last handover: The Poles Kinga Zbylut (POL, Fischer ***), Monika Hojnisz-Starega (POl, Fischer **), Kamila Zuk (POL, Fischer *** ) and the 40-year-old final skier Magdalena Gwizdon (POL) at her 18th World Championship. In the last prone stage Norway and Sweden almost caught up with her, who then passed the Pole on the way to the last standing stage. In the last shooting, Marte Olsbu Røiseland shot quickly and perfectly and secured her fourth gold in Antholz. Hanna Öberg (SWE, Fischer ***), who was sent into her leg by Linn Persson (SWE, Fischer ***) at the same time as Norway, had to visit the penalty loop twice. Behind Norway, five teams left the stadium at close intervals, so there were still some changes of position on the last lap: The German team won silver with Karolin Horchler (GER, Fischer ***), Vanessa Hinz (GER), Franziska Preuß ( GER, Fischer ***) and Denise Herrmann (GER, Fischer ***), who at the final lap outsprinted the Ukrainians Anastasiya Merkushina (UKR), Yuliia Dzhima (UKR, Fischer ***), Vita Semerenko (UKR, Fischer ** *) and Olena Pidhrushna (UKR, Fischer ***). Jessica Jislova (CZE), Marketa Davidova (CZE), Lucie Charvatova (CZE, Fischer **) and Eva Kristejn Puskarcikova (CZE, Fischer ***) took fourth place ahead of Sweden. In the finish area, the deeply disappointed Hanna Öberg had to be comforted by Tandrevold and Eckhoff.

In the men's relay, a duel developed between the French and the German team, represented by Erik Lesser (GER), Philipp Horn (GER, Fischer ***), Arnd Peiffer (GER) and Benedikt Doll (GER). Norway with Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen (NOR), Johannes Dale (NOR, Fischer ***), Tarjei Bø (NOR, Fischer ***) and Johannes Thingnes Bø (NOR, Fischer ***) had to go into a penalty loop by Christiansen very early in the race and, like the Norwegian women, they were lagging behind. Halfway through the race, the leading duo was more than one minute ahead of the chasers led by Norway. After everything went perfectly in the German team with the first three athletes, final skier Benni Doll got a black day: he ruined the chance of gold with three spare rounds in prone shooting and even a penalty loop in standing shooting and almost lost the medal. Despite two spare rounds from Fillon Maillet in his standing stage, the French could no longer be caught and cheered for the gold medal. Germany and Norway almost left the stadium together and on the last lap Johannes Thingnes Bø proved to be stronger and won the silver medal in front of the German team. Fourth place went to the Russians Evgeniy Garanichev (RUS, Fischer ***), Matvey Eliseev (RUS), Nikita Porshnev (RUS, Fischer ***) and Alexander Loginov (RUS, Fischer ***), but above them there is a new suspicion of doping - in the morning there was a raid on Loginov and his personal trainer. The Slovenians Miha Dovzan (SLO), Jakov Fak (SLO, Fischer ***), Klemen Bauer (SLO, Fischer **) and Rok Trsan (SLO, Fischer) were beaten by the Russians in the finish sprint.
