Norway wins gold in the mixed relay

In the opening competition of the Biathlon World Championships in Antholz (ITA) Marte Olsbu Røiseland (NOR), Tiril Eckhoff (NOR, Fischer ***), Tarjei (NOR, Fischer ***) and Johannes Thingnes Bø (NOR, Fischer *** )took the gold medal in the mixed relay. Silver went to the local heroes from Italy, followed by the Czechs Eva Kristejn Puskarcikova (CZE, Fischer ***), Marketa Davidova (CZE), Ondrej Moravec (CZE, Fischer ***) and Michal Krcmar (CZE).

Already the starting skiers from Norway and Italy had an exciting duel which was to continue until the end. Johannes Thingnes Bø got the decisive advantage on the last shooting: Although both missed twice, the Norwegian was faster and left the shooting range nine seconds ahead of Dominik Windisch (ITA). Previously, the local hero had been able to race with Bø and close all the gaps again - but when the Norwegian gave everything on the last lap, he was no longer able to do so. Michal Krcmar's chances of getting closer came back due to the mistakes of the two competitors, but he couldn't make up much time with one mistake. At the finish, he cheered the bronze medal all the louder, which nobody had expected after the previous season's performances. The German quartet Franziska Preuss (GER, Fischer ***), Denise Herrmann (GER, Fischer ***), Arnd Peiffer (GER) and Benedikt Doll (GER) took fourth place with a penalty loop after he pushed past the Ukrainian final racer on their final lap. Anastasiya Merkushyna (UKR), Yuliia Dzhima (UKR, Fischer ***), Artem Pryma (UKR) and Dimitro Pidruchniy (UKR) finished fifth despite a penalty loop - as so often, they were at time in good shape for the World Championships.
