Daniel Huber gets his first World Cup victory with Austria

The Austrian eagles Philipp Aschenwald (AUT, Fischer), Daniel Huber (AUT, Fischer), Jan Hörl (AUT) and Stefan Kraft (AUT, Fischer) started with a victory in the new World Cup season at the opener in Wisla (POL). Daniel Huber made for the predecision with the longest jump in die final round. Second place went to Norway's Daniel Andre Tande (NOR), Thomas Aasen Markeng (NOR, Fischer), Marius Lindvik (NOR) and Robert Johansson (NOR) ahead of the local heroes Piotr Zyla (POL), Jakub Wolny (POL), Kamil Stoch (POL, Fischer) and Dawid Kubacki (POL).

After many nations were head-to-head for a long time in the first round, at the beginning of the final Austria and Poland opened a gap to their oppenents under a changing tailwind during the entire competition. Above all, the 26-year-old Daniel Huber, who had to fight long for a place in the World Cup team, was able to convince in both rounds and proved that he can more than keep up with his experienced teammates. After six jumps, the Austrians were 30 points ahead of Poland and another eight points ahead of the third-placed Slovenians. When the third Polish jumper Kamil Stoch ended up clearly behind the expectations of his compatriots, the Norwegians managed to make it to second place, which they kept until the end. The Austrians claimed victory 22.5 points ahead of the Scandinavians and Daniel Huber was happy about his first victory. "That's how fast it can happen that you're back in the yellow jersey and the hunted ones. It was a good start. Everyone did a great job. We have a great team spirit and push and motivate each other. That shows that we are heading in the right direction", said the 26-year-old, who already finished third in qualification yesterday. The hosts from Poland had to be satisfied with third place five points behind Norway. Fourth went to the Slovenes, where the veteran Peter Prevc (SLO, Fischer) dropped a few meters in the first round until he scored the most points for Slovenia in the final. The World Champions from Germany are still looking for their form under their new coach Stefan Horngacher, so that for Richard Freitag (GER, Fischer), Markus Eisenbichler (GER, Fischer), Stephan Leyhe (GER) and Karl Geiger (GER, Fischer) not more than fifth place was possible.
