"I'm really pleased about this silver medal!" This was how a delighted Ivica Kostelić reacted to second place in the WSC Super Combined in Schladming (AUT). Despite being so happy the Croatian was still critical of his performance: "I earned this medal in the Downhill, not in the Slalom. A Super Combined is never over until you've put in a good performance in both disciplines."
Top Downhill, nail-biting Slalom

The Slalom was a battle of nerves for Kostelić as he waited in the finish area. He breathed a sigh of relief, however, when favourite Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR) straddled a gate. This was the moment when Kostelić knew that one of the medals would be his! Regrettably it was not to be gold, despite his performance in the Downhill, but the Croatian superstar and his team are satisfied. "It's never easy to win a medal at major events like this. Unfortunately I was not able to make the most of my best discipline this time. I was too late in every turn and didn't get into them until I had passed the gate. I didn't really get into a rhythm in the run."

A worthy winner

This cannot be said of race winner Ted Ligety (USA) who, after a very good Downhill run, went on to put in a sensational performance in the Slalom. "He simply deserved to win gold more than anyone else today," said Kostelić, acknowledging the achievement of his strongest opponent. "To be successful in the Slalom I will certainly have to step up a gear or two," added today's silver medallist.
