RUSSIAN MEN WIN RELAY IN LE GRAND BORNAND
Russian biathlon relay consisting of Ivan Tcherezov (RUS, Fischer skis and boots), Alexander Loginov (RUS), Evgeniy Garanichev (RUS, Fischer skis and boots) and Anton Shipulin (RUS, Fischer skis and boots)celebrated victory in Le Grand Bornand shortly ahead of the German team.
Germany dominated until the last standing stage
For a long time everything looks like a triumph for the German biathletes Erik Lesser (GER), Andreas Birnbacher (GER, Fischer), Arnd Peiffer (GER, Fischer) and Simon Schempp (GER): Especially the Fischer-biathletes Birnbacher and Peiffer showed an excellent performance and maintained their lead that Lesser endowed them up to at most 30 seconds. For the first time since 2011 I was alone in the lead in a relay and it was a great feeling", Peiffer stated during the race. But this good feeling wasn't enough and Schempp wasn't able to sustain his position against strong skier Anton Shipulin and Simon Eder (AUT, Fischer skis and boots). At the last standing stage only eleven seconds seperated the German from his two chasers: Schempp had to use one spare round while Shipulin hit each target and Eder said good-bye to the fight for the victory by using all three spare rounds. During the final lap Schempp passed the Russian but Shipulin was able to edge him out in the final stretch and captured the victory for Russia. "I felt that I had good power out on the tracks and saved my energy for the finish", Shipulin stated. Third spot behind Germany went to team Austria with Christoph Sumann (AUT), Daniel Mesotitsch (AUT, Fischer skis and boots), Dominik Landertinger (AUT) and Simon Eder. The Swedes with their first skier Tobias Arwidson (SWE, Fischer), Björn Ferry (SWE, Fischer skis and boots), Fredrik Lindström (SWE, Fischer skis and boots) and Carl Johan Bergman (SWE) cinvinced with another good race finishing fourth.
