Russia's cross-country skier were able to celebrate a triple triumph in last cross-country decision at Olmypic games in Sochi in 50 kilometres free mass start: Gold went to Alexander Legkov (RUS) followed by Maxim Vylegzhanin (RUS) and Ilia Chernousov (RUS).
Pit stop after 30 kilometres brought action into the race
As usual the pace in men's free mass start first was relaxed, the pit stop after 30 kilometres which was used by a large group of athletes brought movement into the race. Matti Heikkinen (FIN) missed to change skis and used his opportunity to attack out of a grouf of outsiders while the favourites changed skis. His solo escape was done after ten kilometres due to the high pace of Russian Legkov after having up to 22 seconds advantage against the chasers. On the last 10k loop the speed was controlled by the Swedes for a long time, first Anders Södergren (SWE), then Daniel Richardsson (SWE), but the favourites were directly behind them.

Ski breakage of Cologna opens the decision
Round about two kilometres before finish also Dario Cologna (SUI) belongs to the main favourites for a medal. But then had to put up with a broken ski in the flat before the long uphill - finally he came in one and a half minutes behind on spot 27. Meanwhile the race took off in the last uphill: Legkov attacked, his compatriots Vylegzhanin and Chernousov as well as Martin Johansrud Sundby (NOR) were able to follow: Four athletes fighted for just three medals. But nobody was able to defeat Alexander Legkov. He claimed Olympic title in the final sprint ahead of Maxim Vylegzhanin and Ilia Chernousov - the Norwegian missed out. In sprint for fifth spot surprisingly strong Sergei Dolidovich (BLR) edged out Robin Duvillard (FRA). Shortly behind them Anders Södergren (SWE) was ranked in very good seventh followed by his team mates Daniel Richardsson (SWE) and Johan Olsson (SWE).
