Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) celebrated Olympic title in 10 kilometre classic race despite her broken foot. The Pole succeed in brilliant sunshine and spring temperatures ahead of Charlotte Kalla (SWE) and Therese Johaug (NOR).
With painkiller straight to Olympic title
Drugged up to the eyeballs with painkillers Justyna Kowalczyk captured Olympic gold in her highlight discipline 10k classical. "I take medicine against my pain but they help me just three hours", the Pole whose left foot is also fixed with tape told before the race. For her ten kilometres she needed 28:17.8 minutes and thus she was 18.4 seconds faster than Charlotte Kalla who secured anew silver medal. Kowalczyk started very fast into her race and was able to keep that pace despite her pain due to a metatarsal bone fracture. For a long time Marit Bjørgen (NOR) was her first chaser but the skiathlon Olympic Champion dropped back after slower last kilometres and even missed the podium finishing just fifth. Bronce medal went to Therese Johaug after strong last kilometres followed by Aino Kaisa Saarinen (FIN). Stefanie Böhler (GER) surprisingly finished strong sixth. Best Russin athlete in front of her home crowd became Natalia Zhukova (RUS) who sent Kerttu Niskanen (FIN) and Heidi Weng (NOR) to the following spots. Krista Lähteenmäki (FIN) who was early caught up by Charlotte Kalla finished tenth.
