In individual competition in Oberstdorf Eric Frenzel (GER, Fischer skis and boots) was able to continue his winning streak. Second went to Jan Schmid (NOR, Fischer skis, boots and poles) followed by Akito Watabe (JPN, Fischer skis and boots).
Again a tactical race
Shortly before the Olympics the nordic combined athletes showed an tactical race again on challenging tracks in Oberstdorf. Although series winner Eric Frenzel caught up best jumper Christoph Bieler (AUT) very early he skied very relaxed then. Thus a leading group of five was built and the larger chasing group came closer and closer. Just three kilometres before finish the leaders sped up again, the pre-decision was made at Burgstall uphill again, 700 metres before crossing the line: Jan Schmid was in the lead so Frenzel wasn't able to attack as in team event. Both were able to crate a small gap, Frenzel overtook out of the slip stream and outsprinted Schmid. "It were very challenging and slow conditions. Thus it is very difficult to ski alone and that is why I decided to wait for the group. We did a good job with keeping our chasers at arm's length. Then everything depends on the final sprint - and I had good legs as well as yesterday", Frenzel stated. Third spot went to Akito Watabe. In the chasing group Johannes Rydzek outsprinted Björn Kircheisen (both GER, Fischer skis and boots) - Kircheisen increased from 27 to 7 with the fastest skiing time, Rydzek from 20 to 6. Bernhard Gruber (AUT, Fischer skis and boots) came in tenth.
