ROPONEN CLAIMS VICTORY AT THE ENGADINER SKIMARATHON AHEAD OF BONER
Riitta-Liisa Roponen (FIN, Fischer skis and boots took the victory at the Engadiner Skimarathon with 12.400 starters over 42 kilometers in free technique ahead of Seraina Boner (SUI, Fischer). On the mens side Remo Fischer (SUI, Fischer) had to accept defeat in fourth place after a group sprint at the finish.
The plan from Riitta-Liisa Roponen worked quite well:"I wanted to ski very fast right from the beginning and try to follow the men’s field as long as possible” said the overwhelmed winner. Roponen managed was able to ski with the second men’s group until 5 kilometres before the finish until she had a fall in a short downhill. Nevertheless she marked the new women's track record with 1:29:52.3.
Seraina Boner ensured second place. Jessica Müller (GER, Fischer skis and boots) finished in seventh place ahead of Antonella Confortola-Wyatt (ITA, Fischer) and Tatjana Mannima (EST, Fischer skis and boots), who thus claimed the victory in the overall ranking of the FIS Marathon Cup.
On the mens side once more the decision was taken by a final sprint from a big group. There Remo Fischer had to be satisfied with fourth place. "I had awesome fast skis, so it is even more hard to finish in fourth place with just 1.4 seconds back," said the Swiss.
