Petter Northug (NOR, Fischer) caught the World Championship title after a hard race in 15k free competition. The Norwegian left Johan Olsson (SWE, Fischer) behind.
Northug goes for the limit
This gold medal was a hard fight for Petter Northug: The Norwegian skied a high pace from start to finish and was soon ahead of all opponents with a good advantage. During his last of three laps he maxed out and collapsed after crossing the line. Silver went to Davos winner Johan Olsson who concentrated especially and this race and missed out the skiathlon, eleven seonds back. Sjur Roethe (NOR, Fischer) was third-best Norwegian in finishing fifth ahead of Calle Halfvarsson (SWE, Fischer) and the surprisingly strong Estonian Aivar Rehemaa (EST, Fischer) who early set the fastest times. Dario Cologna (SUI, Fischer skis and boots) was on his way to a medal up to 10k but he lost more than one minute during his last lap and came in only eighth. Daniel Richardsson (SWE, Fischer skis and boots) was ranked tenth.
