Kikkan Randall (USA)
Petter Northug (NOR)

Kikkan Randall (USA, Fischer) and Petter Northug (NOR, Fischer) are the winners of pre-olympic free sprint at Olympic tracks in Sochi.
Randall - Jean - Brun-Lie
Kikkan Randall did it again: Sprint specialist from Alaska scored victory in sprint race in Sochi, round about one year before the Olympics. It was her fourth in an individual race this season. The American was a bit surprised about her performance because she was sick during the last days. It is great, again a sprint success. I am happy that I felt so well today. If you are here you just want to go out and ski. That's a good sign for the Olympics", Randall said. She dominated all her heats from the leading position and left an early jubilating Aurore Jean (FRA, Fischer) behind, but it was the best World Cup finish ever for the Frenchwomen. Third went to Celine Brun-Lie (NOR, Fischer). Finnish biathlete Mari Laukkanen (FIN, Fischer skis and boots), fastest-skiing in prologue, came in fifth ahead of Ida Sargent (USA, Fischer). Justyna Kowalczyk (POL, Fischer skis and boots) already failed in prologue.

Northug - Cologna - Hofer
Petter Northug celebrated victory in free sprint although he got a written reprimand. The Norwegian exhinited an unsportsmanlike behavior in quarterfinal (blocking Japanese Nobu Naruse) and was reprimanded by jury decision - the second warning within one season would stand for a diaqualification. During the final a very unhasty pace was held as in every Northug-heat before, for a short time Northug even lost the contace to the leading trio, but he was able to close the gap directly. So the low speed favors the Norwegian and he edged out Dario Cologna (SUI, Fischer skis and boots) in the final strech. In third spot sursprisingly finished David Hofer (ITA, Fischer skis and boots), for him it was his best World Cup result ever beyond teamsprints. Any less surprising fourth spot: Sergey Ustiugov (RUS, Fischer skis and boots), multiple Junior- and brand new two-times U23-World Champion, missed his first podium during his second World Cup weekend shortly. Alexey Petukhov (RUS, Fischer skis and boots) came in sixth in the final and was pretty useless in the high altitude of Kaukasus.
