Justyna Kowalczyk (POL, Fischer skis and boots) secured her second victory in the second stage of Tour de Ski in Oberhof. She won the handicap race ahead of Therese Johaug (NOR, Fischer) and Marit Bjoergen (NOR, Fischer skis and boots). In men's race Petter Northug (NOR, Fischer) and Dario Cologna (SUI, Fischer) likewise made the podium.
Kowalczyk and Johaug best athletes today
As last year Justyna Kowalczyk celebrated victories in the first two races in Oberhof. The Polish controlled the race together with Therese Johaug who was a few seconds behind at the beginning of the handicap race. They attacked two kilometres before finish and Marit Bjoergen and the Finn Saarinen couldn't follow. Bjoergen finished third later. In front of the race Justyna Kowalczyk and Therese Johaug fighted for victory until the finish line and the Norwegian lost by a hair's breadth. Kikkan Randall (USA, Fischer) came in sixth. "This
was a really tough race, the snow was really difficult, but I am really satisfied that I'm number one in the
Unfortunately the skis didn't
work perfect, but anyhow I think the best idea today was to ski on Zero-skis,
which I also had", Kowalczyk said. Northug second ahead of Cologna
As supposed the decision in men's race was made only a few meters before finish again. While German Teichmann was ahead Dario Cologna felt in the last uphill before stadium and slowed all the other athletes down. The Swiss was back on his skies quickly and finished third behind Petter Northug. "I
was on the back skis of Matti Heikkinen as I saw him fall right in
front of me, I had to go out in the snow, but I think I was lucky I
didn’t fall. I am satisfied with the first two days in Oberhof. I
didn’t do well in Oberstdorf last year; I want to change that this year", said Northug.
Giorgio Di Centa (ITA, Fischer) showed a great race for the first time this year and came in sixth ahead of Lukas Bauer (CZE, Fischer) who did a lot of work during the race.
